Chapter 15

Cuss was up early the next morning, and over breakfast, he touched base with Juan.

“How’s it going?” he asked.

“You were supposed to get me access to the wire-and-chip assembly from Agnes Ming so the electronics guy could see if he could use it as a trace. He can’t start without it. I looked into getting it through my own channels, but it’s just like I predicted. Everyone is dragging their feet while they cover their asses, and I don’t have the authority to take responsibility on my own.”

“I did that,” said Ygo. He sounded defensive. “Hold on.”

“I started the process,” Cuss told Juan. “Give me a sec while I see what the problem is.” He put Juan on hold.

“It’s stuck at the coroner’s office” said Ygo. “She wants you to pick it up personally since you’re the one taking the responsibility.”

“Can you get around it?”

“Probably. But by the time I work through it all, you’ll be back there anyway.”

“Get started in case things drag out here.” He paused. “Thanks, Ygo.”

Cuss returned to Juan. “It’s waiting for me to pick up at the coroner’s office. I’m not sure if I can free it before I get back. I’ll do my best.” Then, “You were going to show pictures of Moore, Wallingford, and that pilot, Rex Luskin, around the flight decks.”

“Yeah. As it turns out, with a passenger and cargo port for each of four cities, times four shifts in a twenty-four-hour day, times two sets of shifts to fill a week, it takes sixty-four interview visits to catch everyone, and that’s if no one is out sick. So I’ve split it up. I’m covering Hermes, and I have a detective friend on Apollo who’s covering there. My commander reached out to the commanders of Athena and Demeter to recruit detectives to cover those cities. So far we’re about a third of the way along. I’m studying the reports as they come in to make sure I feel comfortable with everyone’s efforts. Nothing has popped yet. I’ll let you know when it’s done.”

“You continue to impress me, Juan. Keep me in the loop.”

“Oh, and a last bit of news. I’m being promoted to the Terra Deck station when I get a new partner next week.”

“Wow, congratulations! The mayor must be coming around. Who’s the lucky detective?”

“Wanda Piccolo. She’s a transfer from Demeter. I don’t know much about her and am choosing not to review her file in advance. Instead of going in with a bunch of preconceived ideas, I’m going to meet her first and form an opinion based on my observations and our actual interactions. It’s sort of an experiment. After I know her a bit, then I’ll research her background, and hopefully then the information will have context.”

“Let’s get this case resolved so you two can start your new partnership with a clean slate.”
